*d$Apple Computer officially announced
*6#System 7.5 on August 2. Since this
*7'release is for all Macintosh computers
*6((except for the Macintosh XL, Macintosh
*6$128K and Macintosh 512K/512Ke) this
*6"issue of the Information Alley is
*6"dedicated to providing a thorough
*6'overview and description of several of
the major features.
Issue Length
*j(Because there is so much information to
*6&cover about System 7.5, this issue is
*6&slightly longer than normal. And even
*6'with the additional length, this issue
barely touches on the many new
*6&features and functions of System 7.5.
*6%We will continue to include articles
*6)about System 7.5 in future issues of the

you want and can use.
Digital Signatures
*i*You will find an article on page 12 about
*6!using DigiSign to create digital
!signatures. After issue 7 (which
*6$included an announcement about this
*7)issue
s focus) was released, we received
*6(a request from Macintosh user Bil Corry
*6'asking us to include information about
*6)digital signatures. We try to respond to
*6"article requests and are happy to
*6)include this information in this issue
*7#especially since digital signature
*6(functionality is now included in System
*6!7.5. Thanks for the request, Bil.

Lucida
The Macintosh System 7
operating system has
established a tradition of
delivering breakthrough
functionality to
Macintosh users.
d&Through the regular release of system
*6&extensions and enhancements, System 7
*6)has come to offer features such as built-
*6"in mail and messaging, multimedia
*6#capabilities, support for multiple
*6'languages, and the ability to automate
*7#routine tasks. It is also the only
mainstream personal-computer
*6#operating system for RISC (Reduced
*6!Instruction Set Computing) based
*6'Macintosh computers, such as the Power
Macintosh.
*j&With the release of System 7.5, Apple
*6'offers even greater power to Macintosh
*6!users, providing technology that
*6+actively assists you, elegantly simplifies
*6*many tasks, offers built-in compatibility
*7#with MS-DOS and Windows data files
*6 and diskettes, and brings users
*6$advanced graphics capabilities. The
*6%result is greater productivity and a
*6#computing environment more closely
*7(tailored to your individual preferences.
*i&System 7.5 offers several significant
*6!enhancements that enable greater
*6#efficiency and speed
letting you
*6&minimize the number of steps it takes
*7'to complete a given task. In addition,
&System 7.5 introduces QuickDraw GX, a
*6$sophisticated graphics and printing
*7%architecture that represents a major
*6$advance in ease-of-use for everyday
*6&printing as well as high-end graphics
manipulation.
*Z'To make it easier to work with others,
*6(System 7.5 also builds in collaborative
*6&technologies such as electronic mail,
*6(catalogs, and electronic signatures via
*6%PowerTalk. It also supports industry
*6"standards such as DOS and Windows
*7(data files, and the TCP/IP protocol. By
*6#fitting into your larger computing
*6$environment in this way, System 7.5
*6'provides you with a much broader range
*6&of options. Having an open, connected
*6"environment is important for many
*7%Macintosh users
as well as DOS and
*6"Windows users who are considering
*6&Macintosh. They are equally concerned
*6$about making choices that will give
*6"them the greatest range of future
options.
*Z(System 7.5 enhancements fall into these
major areas:
)<#Active assistance and customization
Compatibility
Advanced graphics and printing
Collaborative technologies
Mobile computing
Active Assistance and
Customization
Apple Guide
*U%A whole new kind of help system that
*6)features active assistance; it walks you

QuickDraw GX is a Macintosh
system software extension
that provides printing
features as well as
advanced graphics,
type, and color
capabilities.
d!QuickDraw GX works with existing
*6%Macintosh applications and fonts and
provides enhanced printing
*6'functionality and document portability.
Features
PostScript integration
QuickDraw GX automates the
*6'typographic process determining proper
*6+kerning, justification, and ligature sets.
*6%It also provides a number of ways of
working with PostScript
Enhanced font management
QuickDraw GX uses Adobe Type
Manager GX (ATM GX) to provide
*6#complete support for Type 1 fonts.
*6$You can work directly with Multiple
*6'Master fonts, eliminating the need for
*7 multiple weights and instances.
Smarter printing of type
QuickDraw GX controls the
*7!downloading of all font formats,
*6"including TrueType, to PostScript
*6!printers. QuickDraw GX downloads
*6$only the characters needed from any
*6%font so that more fonts can exist in
the printer RAM.
)<#Extended functionality of existing
PostScript devices
&QuickDraw GX provides real-time color
*6&interaction between objects (transfer
*7"modes), perspective transforms on
*6"graphics and type, and high-level
*6%type features on existing PostScript
*6 devices through ColorSync color
management technology.
!Customizable, Extensible Printing
*Y%QuickDraw GX lets you use a printing
*6#enhancer background application to
*6#customize your printing process to
*6)provide increased control, security, and
*6'feedback. Examples of this feature are
*7#print multiple document pages to a
*6*single sheet of paper, or printing grayed
Confidential
across every page of a
document.
*U%Capabilities of QuickDraw GX
drivers
*6$may be expanded by adding QuickDraw
*6(GX
Extensions to a user
s system folder.
Printing Interface
*Y&You can create a desktop icon of your
*6&printer then drag any document on top
*6(of the icon to have it printed. You can
*6*use the printer icon to reorder the print
*7)queue, postpone a print job, or transfer
*6)print jobs to other printers by dragging
*6$document icons to a new location or
printer icon.
Printer Sharing
*Y%Using desktop printer icons, you can
*7'share any output device attached to an
*6&individual Macintosh across an entire
network.
Password Protection
*Y!You can control access to output
*6$devices, such as film recorders, to
*7'control the use of costly consumables,
*6$such as color film, color toner, or
expensive types of paper.

How QuickDraw Works
*n#QuickDraw GX is a geometric-based,
*6"resolution and device-independent
*6&graphics system. Images are described
*6(by geometric structures such as points,
*6#lines, and curves. These geometric
*7(structures are defined by a fixed-point
coordinate system.
*R&The coordinate system does not assume
*6$what metric (for example, inches or
*6(millimeters) defines the spacing in the
*6%system. Therefore, the images can be
*6(drawn to any resolution device, such as
*6"a monitor or printer, because the
*7%graphics system makes no assumptions
about spacing.
*R$An analogy to this situation is the
*6&difference between screen (bitmapped)
*6'and TrueType fonts. Both fonts contain
information about how to draw
*6#characters on the screen. However,
*6%screen fonts are best shown at their
*7&predefined point size on a 72-dot-per-
*6)inch (dpi) output device, as illustrated
here:
d&Attempting to change the font size or
*6*draw to a different resolution device can
*7%result in rough edged characters, as
illustrated here:
"This problem does not happen with
*6&TrueType fonts because they are based
on curves.
Supported Output Devices
QuickDraw GX was designed with
*6#various output devices in mind. It
*6(supports raster, PostScript, and vector
*6*(for example, plotter) devices. There are
*6%also many built-in features, such as
*6(halftones and dithering, to produce the
*7 best image for an output device.
Helvetica
QuickDraw GX and QuickDraw
Together
*R$These QuickDraw GX features resolve
*6(many of the limitations with QuickDraw.
*7%QuickDraw is a bit image, resolution-
*6%dependent graphic system. Since many
*6(applications write directly to the data
*6%structures, there have been numerous
*6#compatibility issues. In addition,
*6$support for PostScript was added on
*7"after QuickDraw was designed, and
*6(there is no built-in support for vector
*6#devices. Nor are there any special
*6$graphic functions such as dithering.
However, QuickDraw GX does not
*7%replace QuickDraw. They work side by
side. Thus, even if a you have
*6&QuickDraw GX installed, old QuickDraw
*6+applications still work. Graphic calls are
*6"routed to the correct part of the
*6$graphics system, and both QuickDraw
*7&and QuickDraw GX applications can run
concurrently.
Document Portability
*j#QuickDraw GX supports the Portable
*6%Digital Document (PDD) document file
*6 format, which lets you exchange
*6#documents with other GX
users, who
*6!can read and print the documents
*7'without having the same application or
fonts installed.
*N(Any application can create a PDD, which
*6#retains all the font, graphic, and
*7(typographic information of the original
*6 document. A PDD document can be
*6%opened, viewed, and printed from any
*6"other Macintosh with QuickDraw GX
*6'installed, even if the other Macintosh
*6"has not installed the application
*7'originally used to create the document.

How to Sign Something
*p!The process of signing something
*6'begins with the data to be signed. The
*6'digital signature manager creates a 16
*6$byte digest. The digest is a highly
*6*sophisticated checksum of the data. It is
*7'nearly impossible for two sets of data
*6&that differ in any way to produce the
same digest.
*\%This diagram illustrates the signing
process:
(The signer file uses a private key from
*6+the signer file to encrypt the digest. The
*6'data itself is not encrypted. Only the
*7 digest of the data is encrypted.
*\%The resulting encrypted digest and a
*6'public key certificate are appended to
*6&the data file as a signature resource.

DigiSign is Apple
implementation of
digital signature
technology.
It is a way of
electronically
signing data.
With a digital
signature attached,
a user can verify the
signature to detect
whether or not the data
has been altered since
the signature was
attached. Signature
verification also
*6%checks the validity of the signature
*6*itself, providing positive identification
of who signed the data.
What Digisign Does
DigiSign has two goals:
)<"To provide a mechanism by which a
*6!user can detect whether or not a
*6$document has been altered since the
time it was signed
)<!To positively identify the signer
d'Signing a document does not in any way
*6&encrypt data or prevent it from being
*7&altered. While the process of signing
*6%something does use encryption in the
*6)signature process, it is not possible to
*6*use DigiSign or Apple
s digital signature
manager to encrypt data.
*T$Signing a document does not prevent
*6&someone else from reading or altering
the document. The data is not
*6%encrypted, just as it was before the
*6#signature was attached. Anyone can
*6$read it and anyone can make changes.
*T%The process of verifying a signature
*6$detects whether or not changes have
*6)been made although it is not possible to
discover what the changes were.

*^$The original data remains unchanged
*6$and unprotected from anyone reading
*6&the data or making changes to it. The
*6*only thing that is changed about the file
*6*is the addition of the signature resource.
How to Verify Something
*l%The process of verifying a signature
*6(begins with calculating a new digest of
*6+the original data. Next, the public key is
*7*retrieved from the public key certificate
*6)in the digital signature attached to the
*6$document. The public key is used to
*6%decrypt the encrypted version of the
digest.
*Y&The two digests are then compared. If
*6'they match, the signature verifies. If
*6&they do not match, then something has
*6&been changed on the original document
*6"so that the digests are different.
*Y*This diagram illustrates the verification
process:
d&The process of signature verification
*6$also verifies all signatures in the
*6)attached public key certificate. This is
*7'to ensure that the signature itself is
valid and has not been altered.
Finder Signing
*l(Third party applications will integrate
*7(digital signature technology into their
Public key
Original
Digest
Public
Digest
certificate
products. For example, Shana
*6%Corporation will incorporate digital
*7 signature technology into their
*6#Informed Manager product to enable
*6"electronic authorization of forms.
*^&PowerTalk users can sign entire files
*6)from the Finder by dragging a file to be
*7(signed onto a Signer file. Files signed
*6!from the Finder have a signature
resource attached to them. The
*6&document is also locked. However, the
*6(file locking is not secure. In order to
*6#unlock the document, the user need
*7!only select the document, choose
from the
menu and then
uncheck the
Locked
check box. The
*purpose of locking the file is to prevent
*6'casual changes to the document, not to
*6%secure the file against any possible
changes.
*^%If the name of the file changes, the
*6)signature still verifies. The reason for
*6)this is that the document itself has not
changed, only the name of the
*7 document.
Validating a Signature
*Z(A file signed from the Finder has a new
icon in the
Get Info
window for the file
Verification
button. Click this
!button and a DigiSign dialog box
appears.
*^#To verify the signature, click the
Verify
'button in the DigiSign dialog box. The
*6*signature is checked for validity. If the
*6#signature is verified a successful
*7"signature dialog box is displayed.
*^+If the signature fails to verify, a dialog
*6$displays stating,
The signature of
Document Name
could not be verified.
*6+Either the file has been modified since it
*6'was signed or the signature itself has
been altered
Removing a Digital Signature
*Z%To remove a digital signature from a
*6)document signed in the Finder, click the
Remove
button instead of the
Verify
!button in the preceding process.

Coachmarks
*s$Apple Guide also provides on-screen
coachmarks
that provide visual clues
*7*by circling or highlighting items such as
*6'menu selections. Here is an example of
how this looks:

quickly. It also checks to

d'Apple Guide is an electronic assistant
*7$that guides Macintosh users through
*6'specific procedures one step at a time

d'Working with Apple Guide is not unlike
*6"working with a teacher or coach
*7%someone you can ask questions of and
*6&who points the way, but lets you take
*7&the way yourself. Apple Guide marks a
*7$leap from the passive assistance of
*6'typical help systems to on-line active
*7$assistance that lets you accomplish
*6"tasks as you learn how to do them.
On-screen Prompts
*o'With Apple Guide, you can learn how to
*7#accomplish new or complex tasks by
*7(following on-screen prompts. Here is an
example of how this looks:

...Continued from previous page
*`&make sure that you have completed the
*6%current step before moving on to the
*7 next one.
*[(Apple Guide doesn
t simply offer a text
*6*description of various tasks; instead, it
*6$prompts you with meaningful queries
*6)about specific operations. For instance,
*6'at the desktop level it offers queries
*6 that apply to Finder and system
*7 operations (How do I change the
*6(desktop pattern? How do I share a file?
*6$How do I empty the trash?) and then
*6&provides hands-on instruction for the
selected task.
*[)Apple Guide is also a standard for third-
party applications and custom
*7&solutions. Since Apple Guide is built
*6+into the operating system, it will quickly
*6%become the standard way of providing
help and access to advanced
*6"functionality in many application
*6!programs. Apple expects that the
*7"majority of software vendors will
*6)provide support for Apple Guide in their
applications.
*[&Applications that support Apple Guide
*6"will lead users through the steps
required to perform particular
*6)operations. This is especially important
*7&as applications add more features and
functionality.
*R"In a page layout application, for
*7$instance, a user might want to know
*6#how to change a block of text to a
*6 different font or import a word
*6$processing file into a column. With
*6$Apple Guide, the user can learn the
*6&steps to complete the operation while
*7)actually performing the task and getting
*6(work done
rather than leafing through
*6%a manual or browsing through on-line
*6'help for the relevant topic or working
through a tutorial.
Businesses, schools, and other
*6&organizations can reduce training and
*6$support costs by creating their own
*6$Apple Guide databases to lead users
*7'through tasks that are unique to their
company or organization.
For example, a
%human resources department could use
*7#Apple Guide to assist employees in
*6+filling out forms electronically
guiding
*6'the user through obtaining the correct
*6'form from a network server, filling it
*6"out, and sending it to the proper
electronic mailbox.
*K$Databases can be created with Guide
*7&Maker. Apple will deliver Guide Maker
*6 tool as part of the Apple Guide
*6&Authoring Kit which is expected to be
*6'available through APDA, Apple
s source
*6(for developer tools, when System 7.5 is
available.
Compatibility
*g'Apple
Guide is compatible (can provide
*6(assistance) with System 7.5, PowerTalk,
and QuickDraw GX. Application
*6 programs must be rewritten, and
*6*assistance files created in order to take
*6"advantage of Apple Guide
s active
assistance technology.
Usage Requirements
*g Apple Guide requires System 7.5.
*K#Apple expects that the majority of
*6&software vendors will provide support

System 7.5 DOS/TCP Compa
tibility
d$Macintosh PC Exchange and Macintosh
*6*Easy Open are a set of utilities that let
*7"ProDOS, MS-DOS, Windows, and OS/2
*6%data files be opened and edited with
*6#compatible Macintosh applications.
They work in tandem to let you
*6(efficiently exchange data with users on
these other platforms.
Macintosh PC Exchange
(Macintosh PC Exchange lets you insert a
*6!DOS-formatted disk into an Apple
*6(SuperDrive and view the disk
s contents
*6(from the Macintosh desktop
just as if
the floppy came from another
*7"Macintosh system. When you double-
*6'click on a DOS or Windows file to open
*6&it, Macintosh Easy Open automatically
*6#searches for applications and file
*6(translators that are capable of opening
*6'it and lists the applications for you.
*7!Once an application is selected,
*6 Macintosh Easy Open manages the
*6%translation and opening of the file.
*k&If you have a Power Macintosh system,
*6 with System 7.5 you can have an
*6'additional level of compatibility with
DOS and Windows via emulation
*7&provided by SoftWindows from Insignia
*6#Solutions. SoftWindows is a native
*6%PowerPC application that emulates an
*6%Intel x86 processor and lets you run
*6%DOS and Windows applications on your
*6'Power Macintosh on top of the standard
Macintosh operating system.

[2FDDE@:
0ogeaggfhlf
d With the
System 7.5
operating
system, Apple
now builds in
its AppleScript
scripting
technology to
let users automate
routine or
complex tasks
offering the
broadest range
of scripting
options
available.
*_'Using AppleScript
Watch Me
feature
*6#in supported applications, you can
*6)automate any series of actions
such as
reformatting a document or
*6%recalculating a spreadsheet. You can
*6*also use scripting to easily build custom
*7'solutions by combining the most useful
*6'features of several applications
for
*6$instance, a word processing program
*6#could be scripted to automatically
*6%retrieve information from a customer
*6!database and an accounts payable
*7%module to generate a dunning letter.
As of early 1994, 80 software
*7!developers announced support for
*6*AppleScript, including Microsoft, Claris,
*6$Aldus, ACIUS, Deneba, Great Plains,
Symantec, WordPerfect, Alladin
*6'Systems, CE Software, and UserLand. By
*6!providing
scriptability
, their
*7)applications can be linked to each other
and with the Macintosh Finder
via
scripts.
Scripting Desktop Functions
*b!With System 7.5, the Finder also
*6'becomes
scriptable
, meaning that you
*6#can now automate system tasks with
*7$your scripts. The Scriptable Finder
inder with
ppleScr
%provides full Object Support Library
*6)support to the Macintosh Finder, letting
*7)the Finder be scripted and recorded. For
*6$instance, using AppleScript and the
*6%desktop functions of the Finder, you
*6&could create a script that backs up a
*6 hard disk onto a server. Taking
*6(advantage of the Scriptable Finder, you
*7*could also create a script that sets up a
*6*File Sharing
folder, automatically
*6"enabling File Sharing, specifying
*6+privileges, and creating a folder that can
be shared.
*\'Using AppleScript to script the Finder
*6(along with scriptable applications, you
*6'could automate the process of updating
*6"a weekly report. The script could
*7&retrieve and open the report template
*6'from a departmental server and then go
*6'onto the administrator
s hard disk and
open the most recent budget
*6$spreadsheet, selecting this month
*6'figures and copying them directly into
the report.
*[)The script could then enter today
s date
*7"in the report, open the PowerTalk
mailer
attached to the report
*6%document, identify people on several
*6#different mail services to whom it
*6(should be sent, and send it. Once sent,
*6'the script can do a
Save As
and name
*7)the report with the current date, saving
*6'it in an archive folder on the server.
Improvements Over Previous
Finder/AppleScript Capabilities
*o%The Finder Event Suite provided with
*6)the 7.0 Finder is inadequate for all but
*7#the most basic of scripting needs.
*6*Providing a Scriptable Finder is the most
*6(compelling thing that Apple could do to
*6&leverage the power of AppleScript and
speech-recognition software.

Scriptable Finder Components
*l$The following are components of the
Scriptable Finder:
)<(Full scriptability and recordability of
*6$all Finder functions. You can write
*6(scripts that can do anything that could
*6#be accomplished using the standard
*6$point-and-click interface currently
*6$supported by the Finder. You create
sample scripts by turning on
*6!recording and using the standard
point-and-click interface.
)<#The Shutdown Items folder found in
*6(the System Folder. Items in this folder
*7&are automatically run when the system
*6"is restarted or shutdown. You may
*6%place a custom script in this folder
*6"and have it run whenever you shut
*6%down your Macintosh. For example, if
*6&you have scripts in the Startup Items
*7'folder that logs onto servers, creates
*6 folders, and copies files, your
Shutdown
scripts could archive these
*6"folders and delete them from your
desktop.
)<"Through scripting, the Finder can
*6 provide services to third-party
applications.
Events and Objects Supported
By the Scriptable Finder
Events
*U'In addition to supporting a variety of
*6$constructs from the Core suite, the
*6%Finder suite defines Apple events for
Cleaning up icons
Ejecting disks
Emptying the Trash
Putting away icons
Restarting a computer
Shutting down a computer
)< Putting a Macintosh Portable or
*7"PowerBook computer into sleep mode
Objects
*T'The following objects are supported by
the Scriptable Finder:
Finder aliases
The Finder application
Application files
)<$Containers such as folders and disks
Windows for Finder containers
Control panels
Desk accessories
The desktop
Disks
Document files
Files
Folders
Font files
Gestalt information
Info windows
Keyboard layouts
)< Processes
Script resources
Sound files
)< Suitcases
)< The Trash
&AppleScript first became available as
*6)part of the operating system in System 7
*6'Pro in October, 1993. With System 7.5,
*6%AppleScript becomes available to all
System 7 users.
The AppleScript Scripter
s Kit
*k System 7.5 includes AppleScript
*6(enabling technology to run AppleScripts
*6(on your system. However, if you want to
*7%create your own scripts, you need to
*6(purchase the AppleScript Scripter
s Kit
(M1730LL/A), which includes
*6&documentation, sample programs, and a
*6"third part interface builder. The
*6(AppleScript Scripter
s Kit is available
*7$where other Apple software is sold.
